Lieksa is a city of 10,295 inhabitants founded in 1973, located in the north-eastern part of the province of North Karelia, on the shore of Pielinen Lake.

Lieksa is known for its breathtaking nature – the sparkling rapids of Ruunaa near the eastern border, the magnificent national landscapes of Koli on the western shore of Pielinen Lake. Various events bring additional colour to the city, and Vaskiviikko in particular attracts music lovers to Lieksa year after year.

Lieksa is also known for its wonderful nature and forests. Indeed, tourism is an important industry in Lieksa – we have Koli and Ruunaa and several dozen tourism-related businesses. The city is also home to strong companies in the wood processing industry. The city's largest private employer is Pankaboard Oy, whose 180 employees manufacture specialty board for the international market. Green Fuel Nordic Lieksa Oy, a biorefinery belonging to the forest sector. Another strong forest operator is Binderholz Nordic Oy, an Austrian family-owned company that acquired Vapo's sawmills in Lieksa and Nurmes in 2016 and is now rapidly developing its operations.

Besides wood processing, the food industry is a major and growing employer in Lieksa. Companies in this field are specialised – for example, Porokylä's Bakery Ltd is known for its gluten-free delicacies and Lieksan Laatuherkut Oy for its high-quality and tailored special foods, such as seasoning butter, processed cheeses, pashas and root purees.
